Climate
Most of India is covered with tropical climate with very high temperatures. Life in India has always followed the rhythm of the monsoon, which means that from late June to late September there is rainy season in most of India. The rain can sometimes fall very intensely in a short time and create flooding. The winter months are from October to February, when March to June is the hottest months. Most people visit India during the dry period when the heat is not so intense and November to March is therefore high season and the best time to visit the country.
Visa
When traveling into India as a tourist, it requires a tourist visa which in 2018 costs DKK 880. You can request a visa to India in two ways. One can request e-visa online athttps://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/index.htmlOr by meeting in person at the Indian Embassy in Copenhagen. If you choose to do it at the embassy itself, be prepared for it to take time. You stand in a long queue, which typically goes all the way out of the embassy and you have to expect you to risk spending 2-3 hours on. The visa must also be picked up personally at embassy. Vaccination
Within a month and a half before departure to India, you should make sure you have the necessary vaccines. When traveling to India for up to 4 weeks, it is recommended to have protection against the following diseases:
- Diphtheria
- Hepatitis a
- Malaria
- Tetanus
- Typhoid
Currency
The currency in India is called Indian Rupi. There is a prohibition on entering and executing Indian rupees, but you can exchange at the airport upon arrival or at the hotel. If you bring currency that you want to exchange, it should be US dollars in small notes.
Security
In general, India is a safe country to visit, but as a tourist you are always a natural target for pickpockets. So always make sure you have yourpersonal papers and valuablesin a safety box or close to the body. Hold a hand over the zipper/opening to your bag when you are in crowded places. And never have valuables in your backpack.

If you are traveling around alone in India as a woman, take your normal precautions and avoid local public traffic, as well as going out in the evening after dark. Also, think about what dress you are wearing. As a woman, and especially with Nordic appearance you get some attention, where it can seem very straightforward, but most people think it only positively.
Hotel standard
Always pre -order a taxi either via the hotel or at the airport via their official channels. Unfortunately, you can risk a really ugly experience if you are not careful.
If you need to drive with a rickshaw (bike or motor -driven) it is also important to arrange a price with the driver in advance.
Clothing
Even during the winter months, it is hot to visit India and it is therefore natural to jump in shorts and t-shirt. However, one must remember proper behavior and dress when visiting their shrines. You take off your shoes when you enter a temple, a mosque or private home. So it’s a good idea to always have a pair of socks in the bag.
It is important that the clothes cover both shoulders and knees. Some Muslim sanctuaries require the hair to be covered, these places will be given scarves at the entrance.
Tip
It is not unusual for 10-15% to be added to Service Charge in addition to the prices of hotels, restaurants and cafes. If there is already service charge on the bill you do not need to be further, but the places that do not write service charge on the bill, it is a good style to be approx. 10%.
Begging
When traveling around India you will not be able to avoid getting close to the country’s many poor. They live especially in the cities, by shrines and tourist attractions. Many of them have extreme physical disabilities, which can be very uncomfortable to experience. If you want to give them a little small money, it will be received with great gratitude, but make it as discreet as possible so that you do not get too much attention and attract a greater quantity. However, you should never give money to the kids.
